OpenAI Agent Builder Shuts Down Nov 30, 2026: Migration Guide

OpenAI Agent Builder shuts down on Nov 30, 2026. What stays, the two migration paths (Agents SDK or Workspace Agents), and a week-by-week plan for ops teams.

Short version: OpenAI scheduled Agent Builder to shut down on November 30, 2026. If you have workflows in it, you need to move them to the Agents SDK (code) or ChatGPT Workspace Agents (natural language) before then (OpenAI deprecations, migration guide). As of November 1, that is 29 days.

What OpenAI has said

We do not have anything else from OpenAI on this, such as pricing differences or what happens to run history after the shutdown. Treat those as unknown and check the migration guide directly.

The two paths, in plain words

Agents SDK (code). You export the workflow as code and continue from there. Because the export is not a perfect copy of the graph, someone has to read the result and test it against the original behavior (migration guide). Choose this if you have a developer, or can hire one.

ChatGPT Workspace Agents (natural language). You describe what the agent should do rather than wiring a graph (migration guide). Choose this if the person who owns the agent is not a developer.

A plan for the next four weeks

This is our suggested schedule, not an OpenAI one. The dates come from the shutdown date above.

  1. Week of Nov 2: inventory. List every Agent Builder workflow, its owner, what it does, and whether anything customer-facing depends on it. Check whether any use ChatKit, which stays (deprecations page).
  2. Week of Nov 9: export and choose. Export each workflow as Agents SDK code so you have a copy no matter which path you pick. Then assign each workflow to the SDK or Workspace Agents.
  3. Week of Nov 16: rebuild and test. Run the new version next to the old one on real inputs and compare outputs. Expect differences, since the export is not 1:1.
  4. Week of Nov 23: cut over. Switch traffic, leave the old workflow untouched as a fallback until November 30.

When to bring in help

If you have more than a handful of workflows, or any that touch customers, money or approvals, an outside developer saves time on the review step. See AI agent developers, or describe the job in one sentence on the matcher. For the wider news this month, see the November trending page.

Quick answers

Questions

When does OpenAI Agent Builder shut down?

November 30, 2026. OpenAI announced the shutdown on June 3, 2026 (developers.openai.com/api/docs/deprecations).

Is ChatKit also shutting down?

No. OpenAI says ChatKit remains available (developers.openai.com/api/docs/deprecations).

What are my migration options?

Two: the Agents SDK, where you work in code, or ChatGPT Workspace Agents, where you describe the agent in natural language (developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/agent-builder/migrate-from-agent-builder).

Can I convert my workflow automatically?

You can export a workflow as Agents SDK code, but the conversion is not a perfect 1:1 match of the graph, so expect to review and fix the result (developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/agent-builder/migrate-from-agent-builder).

Can I still export after November 30?

UNKNOWN. The pages we used do not say. Export before the date and do not rely on access afterward.

Which path should I pick?

OpenAI offers code (Agents SDK) or natural language (Workspace Agents). If someone on your team writes code and the agent is customer-facing or business-critical, the SDK path fits. If a non-developer owns the agent, look at Workspace Agents first. This is our reading of the two options, not OpenAI guidance.
