Best AI Agent Builders in 2026: n8n, AI by Zapier, OpenAI Agents SDK

Where to build an AI agent in late 2026: n8n Agents, AI by Zapier, and OpenAI's Agents SDK or Workspace Agents now that Agent Builder is shutting down. Who each fits.

Short version: pick the tool your team already lives in. n8n Agents if your automations are in n8n, AI by Zapier if they are in Zapier, and OpenAI’s Agents SDK or ChatGPT Workspace Agents if you are coming from Agent Builder, which shuts down on November 30, 2026 (OpenAI deprecations).

We cover only products whose official pages we could check. Make is left out because we have not verified what it publicly documents. We have no pricing here, because we did not pull it, so please check each vendor.

n8n Agents

n8n launched n8n Agents on September 25, 2026 (n8n blog). It sits inside n8n, which you can self-host. The current news is that n8n 3.0 reached beta on October 27, with stable planned for early December, and self-hosted installs must run on Docker (n8n 3.0 blog). Older AI Agent modes and the legacy OpenAI node are removed in 3.0 (n8n 3.0 blog).

Fits: teams already on n8n, or teams that want to host their own automation. Watch for: the 3.0 breaking changes. Read our n8n 3.0 migration guide before upgrading.

AI by Zapier

Zapier Agents is now called AI by Zapier, announced October 6, 2026. Existing Zapier Agents users will need to migrate (Zapier blog).

Fits: teams already running their automations in Zapier. Watch for: if you have Zapier Agents today, the migration is yours to schedule.

OpenAI Agents SDK and ChatGPT Workspace Agents

OpenAI is steering Agent Builder users to two places. The Agents SDK is the code path, and ChatGPT Workspace Agents is the natural-language path (migration guide). Agent Builder workflows can be exported as Agents SDK code, though not as a perfect 1:1 conversion (migration guide). ChatKit remains available (deprecations page).

Fits: teams building directly on OpenAI, and anyone with Agent Builder workflows. Watch for: the November 30 deadline. See the Agent Builder migration guide.
