Computer-use agents in 2026: what they can really do for a business
AI agents that click through websites and desktop apps are improving fast, but still fail most hard tasks. What works today, what doesn't, and how to use them safely, with this month's benchmark numbers.
Some business software has no API: old desktop apps, supplier portals, government sites. For years the answer was manual copy-paste or brittle screen-scraping bots. Computer-use agents promise to read the screen and click through like a person.
This month gave us fresh numbers. (Spin-off of our trending AI agents roundup; latest picks on the trending hub.)
The numbers this month
Simular’s Agent S4, released Oct 20, scored 21.3% on OSWorld V2, a strict benchmark of real desktop tasks, with a 27B open model. Simular reports GPT-5.5 at 13.0% and Claude Opus 4.8 at 20.6% on the same test.
Two ways to read that: progress is fast, and most hard tasks still fail. Benchmarks also miss most real work; Mercor estimates around 90% of work hours go to tasks benchmarks barely cover.
What works today
- Repetitive web tasks with a clear end state: downloading invoices from a supplier portal, filling a form from a spreadsheet, checking an order status. Tools like Browser Use (119,000+ GitHub stars) are built for this.
- Batches a person checks: the agent does 50 entries, a person reviews them in five minutes.
- Read-only tasks: collecting information from screens into a report.
What doesn’t (yet)
- Long tasks with many steps across different apps.
- Anything where one wrong click is expensive (payments, deleting records).
- Sites that block bots. More websites are closing their doors to AI agents, so plan a fallback.
How to use them safely
- Try an API or normal integration first.
- Give the agent its own login, or use a password manager that fills it after approval (1Password for Agents).
- Run it in an isolated browser or VM.
- Have a person check results before anything is submitted.
- Test on 20–50 real cases and measure the success rate before rollout.

Quick answers
Questions
What is a computer-use agent?
An AI agent that operates a computer the way a person does: it looks at the screen, moves the mouse, clicks and types. It is useful for software that has no API.
How reliable are they in 2026?
Better, but not reliable alone. On the strict OSWorld V2 desktop benchmark the best result Simular reported this month was 21.3%, meaning most hard tasks still fail. Simple, repetitive web tasks do much better.
When should I use one instead of a normal automation?
Only when there is no API or integration. If the app has an API, a normal workflow is faster, cheaper and more reliable.
