MCP & ChatGPT apps guide
MCP server for scheduling and booking SaaS
Updated 2026-10-26
Short answer: Scheduling is a natural fit for assistants: "find a slot", "move my 3pm", "who booked this week". Availability reads are the pilot; bookings and cancellations come next with confirmation.
What customers actually ask the assistant to do
- Availability: "When is Dr Rao free Thursday afternoon?"
- Overview: "How many bookings this week, and any no-shows?"
- Reschedule: "Move Sam's appointment to Friday 10am."
- Cancel: "Cancel tomorrow's 9am."
A sensible first set of tools
Start read-only. Ship 5 to 8 tools that answer the questions above, measure which ones get called, then add writes. Tool names and descriptions matter more than people expect: the model picks tools from their descriptions, so write them like help text for a new colleague.
- get_availability (read)
- list_bookings (read)
- reschedule_booking (write, confirm)
- cancel_booking (write, destructive)
Where it goes wrong in this category
- Time zones: always return ISO times with offsets and the account's zone.
- Double bookings from race conditions; re-check availability inside the write.
- Notifying end customers without the user realising.
Rough effort
A read-only pilot on an existing public API is usually 1 to 2 weeks. Adding OAuth, writes with confirmations and an audit log is usually another 3 to 5 weeks. These are estimates; your API shape and auth setup decide the real number.

Questions
Can customers book through ChatGPT?
Yes, with a public booking tool, but start with staff-side tools where users are signed in.
How do we avoid wrong times?
Return explicit offsets and echo the time back in the confirmation.
Do we need OAuth?
For staff using it from Claude or ChatGPT, yes. A pilot can use an API key.
